Name/online handle: Jen
Personal LJ: ktprincesswitch
Email: jennifer.wright2@wku.edu
AIM/Yahoo/MSN/etc: cloudmyjudgment

Character Info
Character: Roland Deschain
Fandom: The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King
Media (book, movie, TV, etc): Book(s)
Character Journal: childeofgilead
Background (at least 150 words, please. Include any special powers,
physical marks, etc): Roland was trained to be a Gunslinger. In fact, he
became the youngest Gunslinger ever, but that was before the World Moved
On. In the beginning, he is chasing the Man In Black (Walter). However,
when he finally catches him, we learn this is but part of the journey to
The Dark Tower. Along his way to the Dark Tower, he has fingers cut off
by did-a-chicks (huge lobster-like creatures), but he is still able to
shoot well with his left hand. He meets Susannah, Eddie, and Jake, who
become his traveling companions. The three are not of Roland’s world,
but of “our” world. Also, in book 6, Roland meets Stephen King and has a
vague knowledge that this man is vital to the survival of his world
(Roland and Jake save Stephen King’s life so he can finish the story.),
so it is actually canon for Roland to know of Stephen King’s books … but
I won’t play that, just in case someone else from SK’s books show up. In
Book 7, he finds the Dark Tower and goes up it only to end up … in
Haruvatat, as my canon goes, at least.
Personality (at least 100 words, please): Roland is rough man, but not
heartless. However, because he has been on his quest alone for so long,
it takes a while for him to warm up to other people, but when he does,
he would die for them, especially Susannah, Eddie, and Jake … Oh, and
Oy, the Billy-bumbler, his Ka-tet. He also takes care of
helpless/defenseless people, as seen in the Wolves of Calla. He has a
quick temper, and tends to see the world in black and white, but he
knows when to be soft if needed. In short, he is the epitome of
gunslinger (they saved the best for last) which is best summed up in
this statement from darktower.net:
Protectors, diplomats, rulers, and terrible enemies in combat, a single
gunslinger armed with the legendary sandlewood-gripped sixguns that are
the mark of his status is easily capable of overcoming very unlikely odds.

Game Specific Info
What sort of room would you like your character to have in the hotel?
(Single, double, triple, four in a room - You can request a roommmate,
or they can be assigned at random as we get more players): Stick him
with a roomie if you like.
What brings your character to the village? What does he need to
learn/achieve, etc? This can be ANYTHING big or small. Chaeck community
info for more info if needed or email the mod): Roland is in Haruvatat
to come to terms with the fact that his quest for the Dark Tower is over.
Does your character have any skills that might be utilised in the
village? (Do you want your character to have a job?): Roland knows how
to do one thing well : kill. I don't think that's useful in the village
though, so right now no job for him.

Other Info
100 words on why you want to play this character: I have been (slightly)
obsessed with the Dark Tower books since I read the first one when I was
ten years old and the series wasn’t even half complete. Now, with all
seven books released, I am no less fascinated with it, and would love to
be able to take Roland on adventures of my own creation, as he interacts
with the people in Haruvatat.

Also, while I love the books dearly, I do not feel that the ending given
was … entirely final, and am hoping to give the Roland in my head a
little piece of mind by bringing him to Haruvatat and having his quest
be complete.

Character based writing sample (RP, journal, fan fic, anything really
that features the character you are applying for. At least 100 words,
please):

After the Battle at Jericho Hill

Roland lay in the cart, not daring to move or breathe for what seemed
like an eternity. All around him were the decaying bodies of what used
to be friends and compatriots, all of whom had died in battle, while he
alone had survived.

Finally, all around him was still, and cautiously, he was able to sit up
and look around. He was in a meadow, next to a large hole dug to be a
mass grave. He looked down at the hole, and then at the bodies
surrounding him, willing himself not to shiver, to cry out, or do any of
the things mind cried out for him to do. He was stronger than that. He
was a gunslinger. The last gunslinger.

He crawled out of the cart, practically falling to the ground, unable to
keep on his feet because his bones and joints were so stiff. He looked
around in the dim light, looking for the Horn of Eld, that which was
rightfully his, and only then realized that in the heat of battle, he
had forgotten to retrieve it from his slain friend’s hands.

Realizing his error, the gunslinger knelt down and wept.
